"DurangoTo SilvertonRail" from Gary Cavalier Photography.The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad carries over 200,000 passengers a year and runs year round.Its locomotives are the 470-480 series manufactured between 1923-1925.It uses 10,000 gallons of water and 12,000 lbs of coal shoveled one shovel at a time for one round trip.The heaviest locomotive weighs 143 tons when loaded and the heaviest passenger car weighs 35 tons.Throughout the course of many years it has also carried over $300 million in precious metals from the mines.This shot was taken while riding in the back of the train on a beautiful Colorado Autumn day in October 2011.Western Slope of Colorado.
